    Description

Great Pen and Ink illustration of Troops Mustering at the White House Signed and Dated 1861. 6 1/2" X 8" archivally mounted and framed. Pencil script note at top left "Lincoln" with ink script caption at top "April 22 / 61 / Mustered in for the three months and going to get our guns Page 2" implying this was part of a larger group of illustrations or meant to be used for publication. Depicts a scene in front of what is clearly the White House, with Lincoln standing on the front portico observing the activity. Recruits, displaying a variety of clothing and some uniforms, marching in two ranks, with others, including at least one woman watching from the background. The formation is led by an officer and a drummer wearing a kepi. A single, apparently significant, figure stands in the foreground, facing the artist wearing frock coat and a large smile. The piece is signed and dated at the lower right "J. M. S. / 1861". Possibly allegorical but more likely from personal observation by the artist, with his identify possibly discernible with some diligent research. A wonderful image depicting Lincoln reviewing what are, obviously, some of the first volunteers to enter the Union Army. This lot requires 3rd party shipping.
