    Description

Great Handcrafted First/ Fifth Corps Badge. This attractive badge was skillfully crafted from Civil War period coinage and reflects the transfer of the Army of the Potomac's embattled First Corps to the Fifth Corps in March 1864. The badge is made from a silver half dollar, measuring 1.25" in diameter, that has been smoothed on both sides, its milled edge still visible. The front surface has been stippled and on it has been mounted a Fifth Corps Maltese cross that was apparently cut from another silver coin. On the arms of the cross are neatly engraved the battle honors: "Chancellorsville/ Gettysburg/ Bethesda Church/ Petersburg 2d June/ 1st Hatches Run/ Big Bethel/ Ceder Mountain." In the center is affixed a smaller silver coin, also burnished smooth with its milled edge visible, on which has been engraved a stand of four muskets with fixed bayonets. The surface of the larger coin shows signs of being blackened, probably to make the rest of the silver badge more prominent. On the reverse are two oblong disks on short posts that would enable the emblem to be attached to something like a buttonhole, such as found on an issue fatigue coat. When the First Corps was essentially disbanded and merged into the Third Division of the Fifth, provision was made to allow its soldiers to "retain their badges and distinctive marks." This eventually resulted in insignia with the Maltese Cross of the Fifth Corps superimposed onto the sphere of the First by the veterans of those units. An extremely well made and striking example of a scarce badge.
