Gettysburg 1863 Diary kept by Corp. John Scott, Co. B, 104th New York Vol. Inf., 3" x 5" black folding wallet style, missing the fold over flap with closure tab, otherwise excellent condition. 124 pages, with entries in both ink and unsmudged pencil script. Interesting diary which, in addition to the normal daily entries includes three places where Scott makes reference to collecting leaves from the battlefields of "Coal" Harbor, Chancellorsville and The Wilderness, e.g. "These leaves was picked during the battle of the Wilderness" and those, along with the ones from Chancellorsville still accompany the diary. Additionally, Scott notes on the front flyleaf, "this book I had in my pocket the day I was wounded at the Batle (sic) of Petersburg, Va. 1864 18 Day of June". Brief but concise daily entries, April 9, ...went to Belle Plain Landing reviewed by President Lincoln, April 18, "...Co. B went and had their likeness taken. I got one took separate" May 2, "...marched 25 miles down the river to Kelly's Ford, crossed the river and marched on the battlefield throwed up entrenchments [Chancellorsville]", June 30, ..."crossed into Pennsylvania camped for the night", July 1 "...marched 5 miles to Gettysburg and went into the fight and had 3 killed in our Co.", July 2, "... the battle still raging. We were engaged". Additional daily entries detailing the pursuit of Lee through Maryland and Virginia, Nov. 21, "...our regt was attacked by some of Mosby's men on picket. One wounded one taken prisoner", Nov. 27, "...guarding pontoon bridge. The whole regt fighting at the front on the plank road". Overall an exceptional Civil War diary and especially desirable with these Gettysburg entries. Scott enlisted in the 104th N. Y. on October 7, 1861, and served with the regt. until muster out on December 22, 1864.
