"Vinegar Joe" Stilwell's Iconic Campaign Hat

General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell's Stetson Campaign Hat With Signed Card From the Navy Relief Fund Auction. Joseph Warren Stilwell (1883-1946) was the U.S. commander of the China, Burma and India theater during WWII. Stilwell's lanky frame, draped in a sweat stained khaki uniform, and topped with his ubiquitous campaign hat, is one of the more iconic images of WWII. We are pleased to offer one of Stilwell's iconic campaign hats originally purchased from a Navy Relief Fund Auction sometime prior to 1946. This example was made by Stetson and bears the mark of the Fort Bragg Post Exchange on the sweat band. "Stilwell" is written, in ink under the brim. A sterling colonel's eagle is pinned to the crown of the hat. Stilwell was promoted to full colonel on August 1, 1935 and was later promoted to Brigadier General in late 1939, so this hat presumably dates from the 1935 to 1939 time period. The sweat band is well-worn, indicating heavy use by Stilwell. The hat is in overall excellent condition, complete with officers' hat cord. The hat is accompanied by a 3" x 5" typed note card which reads "Navy Relief Fund Auction/ Item: Army Officers Campaign Hat./ Control Number: 56/ Donated by: Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, USA" and signed "J. W. Stilwell". This is a fantastic opportunity to own an icon from a distinguished American general.
