General John Peter Shindel Gobin's 14K Gold Grand Army of the Republic Presentation Pocket Watch with Diamonds, Rubies, and Sapphires, C. 1898. The dramatic 14K gold hunter's case watch, made by the Elgin National Watch Company, is a size 18 with a 21 jewel movement and a nickel full-plate. The movement is numbered 6433101. The enamel dial is double sunk with spade hands. The case has the entwined letters "G.A.R." in diamonds, rubies, and sapphires on the back and Gobin's entwined initials, "J.P.S.G.", engraved on the front. The dust cover is engraved "Presented to/ Gen. J. P. S. Gobin/ Commander in Chief/ Grand Army of the Republic/ Cincinnati Sept. 1898". The watch hangs from General Gobin's gold-filled curb link chain with a t-bar and a Knights of Pythias gold-filled fob with enamels. The watch is in running condition. Other than a small hairline crack at the centerline, the watch is in excellent condition.

At the age of 24, John Peter Shindel Gobin enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a first lieutenant in Company C of the 47th Pennsylvania infantry. He rose through the ranks to become the regiment's colonel. On March 13, 1865, Major-General Philip H. Sheridan rewarded Gobin for his performance at the Battle of Pocotaligo in South Carolina by giving him the brevet rank of brigadier general. Gobin mustered out of the service on January 9, 1866, and returned to Pennsylvania where he served as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from 1899 to 1903.
