General Crook's Expedition: Six Uncommon Stereoviews by S. J. Morrow, Yankton, D.T. In September 1876, photographer S. J. Morrow of Yankton, D.T., met troops from Gen. George Crook's command as they approached Deadwood at the end of their long trek from the Little Bighorn. He took thirty-one views that he marketed as "Gen. Crook's Expedition and the Black Hills." With his pictures, Morrow helped popularized the nickname of the expedition as the "horsemeat march" (see #3).

Dated 1876 in pencil on verso, they include:
    (1) Troops passing the old Stockade, French Creek
    (2) Major Noyes and officers of the 2nd Cavalry
    (3) Soldiers cutting up abandoned horse
    (4) Stretcher bearing wounded man from Battle of Slim Buttes
    (5) Loading a pack mule
    (6) Crook's camp at Point of Rocks

Stanley J. Morrow (1843-1921) learned his trade as an assistant near the end of the Civil War to photographer Matthew Brady. Also included is a Morrow image from another set of "Bluff on the Little Big Horn, where some of Custer's men were driven to a watery grave." All in nice, clean condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
