    Description

From the Collection of General Mark Clark: U.S. Army Three Star General's Flag. A beautiful wool flag, 3' x 5', with three U.S. Army Lt. General's white stars on a rich red field. The service/ field flag shows only minor wear and staining from its time of use and only light mothing from storage.

General Clark held the rank of lieutenant general from November 11, 1942, until March 10, 1945. This flag would have flown and traveled with the General as he commanded the US 5th Army during their landing at Salerno and Anzio, as well as the battle of Monte Cassino and the Fall of Rome. By December of 1944, Clark assumed command of all allied forces in Italy as Commanding General of the 15th Army Group. This flag would have flown over his Head Quarters in Italy

All items from the General Mark Clark Collection were originally part of the Museum Collection at The Citadel and were transferred and then sold by the South Carolina State Museum to a private collector in 1992. General Clark served as the commanding officer at the Citadel during the latter part of his career, and it was then that these personal WWII artifacts were given to the school. In 1993 the items were purchased by the Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware and subsequently deaccessioned by them.

Mark Clark was the youngest lieutenant general in World War II, and commanded all U.S. forces in Italy. During the Korean War he succeeded Matthew Ridgway as head of the United Nations Command. From 1954 to 1955 he led the "Clark Task Force" (whose members included Ernest Hollings, Eddie Rickenbacker, and U.S. Navy Admiral Richard Connolly). The group was tasked with analyzing all aspects of U.S. intelligence gathering, and submitted a top secret report to the President as well as an unclassified version for Congress. The group coined the term "intelligence community" to describe "the machinery for accomplishing our intelligence objectives."

This flag was donated to The Citadel where Clark served as Commanding Officer from 1954 to 1965. A copy of the letter of authentication from the Civil War Museum and Library is included with this lot.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
