French 5th Carabiniers Regimental Flag With "Wagram" Battle Honor. The flag measures 36.5" x 46" with a 2" gold wire border. The obverse of the flag features a large white silk diamond shape (29" each side) titled "WAGRAM" in large hand-embroidered gold thread. The diamond is bordered on all sides by hand-embroidered laurel -leaf borders. The corners of the flag are triangular shapes of alternating red and light-blue silk, each adorned with embroidered gold-wire ribbons and laurel wreathes, the center of each wreath embroidered with the number "5". The reverse is identical in the basic design except the central white diamond is titled "L 'EMPEREUR / DES FRANÇAIS / AU 5e REGIMENT / DE CARABINIERS". This beautiful flag is housed in a custom built wood frame, suspended from a wooden dowel through a 1.25" light blue silk sleeve (a later addition) and mounted so that both sides can be clearly.

The silk panels are in extraordinarily good condition given the delicate nature of the material and though there are some scattered areas of soiling and a few areas of surface fraying, there are no holes, splits or major damage except a 14" section of the gold-wire fringe missing on the lower edge near the hoist end.

The Battle of Wagram fought on July 5-6, 1809 was one of the most important military engagements of the Napoleonic Wars and ended in a decisive victory for Emperor Napoleon the First's French and allied army against the Austrian army.
