    Description

Frank Dwight Baldwin Archive: Collection of His Medals. We are selling an archive of material related to two-time MOH winner Frank Dwight Baldwin. This lot contains his Order of Indian Wars membership medal and certificate, his military service medals and his marksmanship and GAR medals. We'll start with his enamel and gold Order of Indian Wars membership medal/badge. It is 1.75" across and suspended from a red, white, blue and gold grosgrain ribbon. It has an Indian holding a rifle alongside a teepee with a sunrise in the background and crossed arrow & sword above. It reads: "Order of Indian Wars of the United States". The reverse lists seven different Indian tribes on each of the rays. An inner circle reads: "Patrium Tuens Civiltatem Ducems" while the inner gold core is inscribed: "Maj. F. D. Baldwin U.S.A. N. 30". Near-mint condition with slight enamel loss to the tip reading "Apaches". It is accompanied by a 19" x 15" parchment certificate from 1901 enrolling Baldwin as a "companion of the First Class in the Order of Indian Wars of the United States... He has been especially distinguished for services in Indian Warfare in maintaining the supremacy of the United States of America." In the next category, we offer Baldwin's military service badges, ribbons and boutonnières. Group consists of: 1) Civil War Army Campaign medal rim stamped "No. 19", full wrap brooch, original first style ribbon in excellent condition, 2) Indian Wars Campaign medal rim stamped "No. 1166", full wrap brooch, original first style ribbon in excellent condition, 3) Philippine Insurrection medal rim stamped "No. 2055", full wrap brooch, original ribbon in excellent condition, 4) Philippine Insurrection medal rim stamped "No. 2219", full wrap brooch, original ribbon in excellent condition, and 5) Army of Occupation Military Government of Cuba medal rim stamped "No. 3765, full wrap brooch, original ribbon in excellent condition. These medals are accompanied by seven red, white and blue boutonnières or bow-tie style decorations. The balance of the medals include: 1) 50 mm. (2") unawarded copper "Department Skirmish Prize" medal made by the U. S. Mint in a custom-fitted box with purple silk lining (minor rim bruise, AU with chocolate patina), 2) one "Sharpshooter" badge with single Maltese cross drop, 3) one "Marksman Sharpshooter 1887-89-90" badge with single Maltese drop and two ladder panels, 4) a single "Marksman" panel with brooch attachment, 5) a complete G.A.R. badge, 6) an 1 3/8" bronze medal with ring attachment for the "Department of Michigan 39th Annual G.A.R. Encampment Denver" (minor spots of verdigris on reverse, beautiful patina), 7) a similar copper medal issued for an unspecified G.A.R. function in Colorado (EF with light corrosion/soiling on verso), 8) an 1 1/2" William Tecumseh Sherman medal in white metal with Michigan hanger issued for the Silver National Encampment of the G.A.R. at Detroit, 9) an 1 1/4" bronze medal for the 100th anniversary of Pike's Peak (EF with some verdigris and dark toning on the obverse), 10) 1 1/4" x 2" copper membership badge of the "United Spanish War Veterans" (AU with spots of corrosion), 11) 1 1/4" x 2 3/4" Civil War-related enamel badge for the Loyal Legion (possible silver and gold content), 12) 1 3/4" celluloid button showing Baldwin wearing his two Medals of Honor, 13) Baldwin's engraved calling card, 14) 1" copper star insignia, 15) copper hanger with naval motif, lacking ribbon and drop (obviously not a Baldwin item), 16) copper hanger inscribed "Colorado Wyoming" lacking attachment, and 17) small brass bar with two shanks on the verso. As an added bonus, we are including the padded leather box used by Baldwin to house his medals. It measures 12" x 6" x 2.75", lined in purple velvet with an inner tray. Substantial loss to leather covers. There are eleven boutonnières, a UVU enamel stud, a United Spanish War Veterans stud, an enamel Knights of Columbus stud, seven Army buttons with eagle, twelve campaign ribbon bars, a silver stud engraved "B" and what appears to be a foreign sharpshooter's badge.
