    Silhouette: [Frederick] Frith, 1843, cut paper with painted details mounted on paper, 7.5" x 9.5", framed to an overall size of 9.75" x 11.75". The painting shows a young officer in the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders). The silhouette is signed and dated in the lower right corner, "Frith" and "1843".

    The Frith family operated the Royal Victoria Gallery between 1837 and 1854. Brothers Frederick and Henry Albert Frith were "PAPRYOTOMIST[s] to His Late as well as to her present Most Gracious Majesty, and to whom most of the brilliant Court of the United Kingdom have sat for Their Likenesses. . ." They claimed to have cut "many Thousand Likenesses", and able to complete the cutting with their "Talismanic Scissors" in only one minute.
