    Description

Relics: Three Relics Related to the Laying of the Transatlantic Cable, from the Collection of J. S. Reigart. One piece is a turned wood candlestick, 6" high, with an affixed brass disc stating that the piece was purchased aboard the S.S. Great Eastern in 1860. The ship was the concept of Isambard Kingdom Brunel using both steam and sail power. The ship's first voyage to the United States began on June 17, 1860 with only thirty-five paying and eight non-paying passengers, it later laid 2,600 miles of transatlantic telegraph cable. The other relic in this group is a turned wood piece, 4" in diameter, with the pencil notation, "Paying out gear of the British Steamer Agamemnon, Aug. 5, 1858". H.M.S. Agamemnon was a battleship in the British Royal Navy that was fitted-out to carry telegraphic cable to assist in laying the transatlantic cable in 1858.
