Relics: Seven Relics Related to European Historical Sites, from the Collection of J. S. Reigart including: a stone sealed in a bottle with a card reading, "Piece of Bonivard's Dungeon in the Castle of Chillon", a relic from the imprisonment of the Genevois monk, Francois Bonivard from 1532 to 1536 immortalized in Lord Byron's narrative poem The Prisoner of Chillon; a beautiful piece of English walnut, 3" x 2.25", with a tooled leather label, "Old St. Paul's London", referring to the medieval cathedral of the City of London built between 1087 and 1314 and a prominent landmark until its destruction in the Great Fire of London in 1666; a stone sealed in a glass bottle with a label identifying it as coming from the Bastille in Paris; four small pieces of cement sealed in a bottle with a card reading, "Original cement from the Cell of Marie Antoinette in the Conciegere, Paris", known during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror as the "antechamber to the guillotine", Queen Marie Antoinette was the Conciegere's most famous prisoner; a stone, 2.25" x 1.5", with a label, "Kenilworth Castle from Mary, Queen of Scots Room"; a carved wood cross, 1" x 1.5", mounted on a "Reigart Collection" card inscribed, "Piece of 'Herne's Oak' Windsor Forest, England", referring to the oak tree where "Herne the Hunter", keeper of Windsor Forest during the reign of Elizabeth I, hanged himself following some serious transgression. Herne was first mentioned by William Shakespeare in The Merry Wives of Windsor. The last relic in this group is a small domed piece of oak mounted on a "Reigart Collection" card inscribed, "Piece of the King William Oak. Windsor Forrest [sic], Windsor, England".Auction Info
