    Description

Jesús de la Garza Archive. Noted military man, Garza saw service almost exclusively in Coahuila y Tejas and held various important positions in the army. Second Lieutenant Garza was in command of the Monclova picket at Nacogdoches in 1830. For years he led the Coahuila campaign against the warring Indians, for which he received several commendations. Garza was wounded many times in battle, and saw action at the Alamo and at Buena Vista. This large lot of eleven letters and documents (most signed by Garza) contains: a list of expenses for the Nacogdoches Presidio (September 18, 1831); an unsigned copy of Garza's letter to Gen. Francisco Mejia regarding loans for troops (March 22, 1843); a listing of non-commissioned officers, soldiers, wives, etc., to whom loans were made (Jan. 4, 1844); a list of cavalry company members formed in response to the order of Dec. 3 1838 (December 12, 1838); a petition in defense of soldier accused of killing a cow (March 1830); the financial records for Nacogdoches Presidio from May to December 1830 (August 19, 1831); a personal letter from Fernando de la Garza (July 5, 1846); an Autograph Letter Signed to Carlos Ocampo concerning finances of the picket and the repayment of a personal loan (March 11, 1832); a list of people at Bavia Presidio who are indebted and the amount owed (December 10, 1843); copies of three letters regarding a Treasury escort, financial aid for soldiers, and assistance for the family of a soldier that has been on the frontier for nine years; and a plea for troops to Gov. of Coahuila & Tejas Juan Sanchez (April 9, 1843). From the Taking of Texas Collection.
