British Raj Massive Sterling Silver Regimental Punchbowl, XVII Cavalry, Indian Army, c. 1909. The bowl is engraved, "Presented to the Officer's Mess / XVII Cavalry / by / Colonel F. C. Atkinson, C.B. / Commandant / 1902-1906". Above the inscription is engraved the badge of the Regiment. The Arts and Craft style bowl is fully hallmarked by the Chester, England assay office in 1909. The bowl measures 9.75" high to the rim, 12.5" in diameter at the top, and 17.25" from handle to handle. It weighs approximately 57.5 troy ounces.

The XVII Indian Cavalry was originally raised in 1857. The first commander was Colonel C. J. Roberts, was one of the larger than life officers serving in India in the nineteenth century. Roberts recruited only Afghan tribesmen for the regiment. In 1861 the regiment was redesignated the 17th Bengal Lancers. In the army reorganization of 1903, the regiment was amalgamated with the 37th Lancers (Baluch Horse) to form the XVII Cavalry. The regiment saw heavy fighting during the Third Afghan War (1919). In 1922 the regiment was redesignated the 17/37 Cavalry.

The bowl was presented to the officer's mess by Colonel Francis Garnett Atkinson, C.B. (Companion of the Order of the Bath). Atkinson, born in 1857, served with the Egyptian Expedition (1882), on the Northwest Frontier of India (1897-1898), and commanded the XVII Cavalry (1902-1906) before assuming command of the Bangalore Cavalry Brigade (1906-1909). Atkinson retired in 1914 with the honorary rank of Major-General.
