First Model Maynard .35 Caliber Percussion Breech Loading Rifle. Although no specimens have been specifically identified, it is known that 175 of these rifles were purchased by the state of Mississippi in December of 1861, with the likelihood of other small quantities being sold to other southern militia units. All metal smooth and dark with a few patches of pitting on the frame, hammer and patch box. 20" barrel with excellent bore, hammer will not stay at full cock, missing tang sight. Maynard tape priming mechanism, and patchbox. Fixed iron rear sight, German silver front sight. Wood with nice rich patina completely untouched just showing a few scattered dents and a circular stamp. A nice example of this scarce breech loading rifle that was so favored by pre-war southern militia units that it was included in later Confederate Ordnance manuals as an official weapon.
