    Description

    First Mississippi Volunteer Infantry of African Descent: Julian E. Bryant Archive, dated 1862 to 1864, and comprised of documents pertaining to the Colonel of the First Mississippi Volunteer Infantry of African Descent, organized at Millikem's Bend, Louisiana and Vicksburg, Mississippi in May, 1863.

    Richard Yates Military Appointment Signed as Governor of Illinois. One page, 11.5" x 18"", Springfield [Illinois], August 4, 1862, appointing "2nd Lieut. Julian E. Bryant...First Lieutenant of Company 'E', Thirty Third Regiment Illinois Volunteers." Charming military vignette at the top under the "Illinois State Militia Head-Quarters" letterhead. Blind embossed Seal of the State of Illinois on the bottom left.

    Muster-In Roll. Two pages, 29.5" x 21", "Hd Qrs of the 1st Mississippi Infty Regiment of A. D,"June 30, 1863. Contains the names of ten men on detached duty from their regular units to serve in the First Mississippi. All ten soldiers come from Ohio, Iowa, or Mississippi Regiments. Contains details of each soldier including rank, date of enlistment and enlistment period, where they were mustered into service, and last pay date. Signed on the verso by Julian E. Bryant as "Major Commanding the Detachment" Horizontal fold is weakened and detaching.

    Receipt for Requisition of Musical Instruction. One and one-half pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Vicksburg, November 18, 1863, from the Camp of the First Mississippi Volunteer Infantry A. D. A list of names of officers of the various companies of the First Mississippi who "hereby contribute, and pay the sums set opposite our signatures, to be expended for musical instruction given to the members of the regimental drum-corps until Jan'y 1st 1864." Some ink bleed-through from the verso; folds.

    Receipt of Expenditures for Musical Instruction. One page, 8" x 12.5", Vicksburg, November, 1863, for "Expenditures of Lieut Col Webber for Drum Corps. (instruction)." Contains a list of names, date of payment, and payment amounts received.

    Also included are a collection and orders : Special Order No. 20, dated October 20, 1862, ordering Lieutenant Bryant to the staff of General C. E. Hovey; Special Order No. 14, dated February 20, 1864, from Vicksburg, giving "Lieut Colonel J. E. Bryant...supervision of the camp" and management of recruitment and directing that he will issue semi-weekly reports on the conditions; Chartered Steamer Free Pass, dated February 20, 1863, on "U. S. Order for Transportation" ticket, issued to "Capt Wolf & sixty men" from Vicksburg to Louisiana; Special Order No. 16, dated September 1, 1863, ordering Major Bryant to try all cases which would be recognized by a regimental Court Martial; Special Order No. 19, dated February 24, 1864, assembling a Board of Inquiry for "the purpose of making an inventory of the Public Property of Company 'G'."

    Additional documents include: Two Accountings: One from Captain Asa B. Nunn for the months January through April, 1864, for Company "D", and one from Captain R. L. Greene "from the first day of January, 1864, to the fifteenth day of March, 1864" for Company "C", both from the First Regiment Mississippi Infantry Volunteers A. D. Accountings include dates, "Source received," amounts, and "How Expended."; Invoice of Equipage Transferred, dated August 1, 1863, to J. E. Bryant from First Lieutenant Carter which includes "One Wall Tent...Two Wall Tent flies...Wall Tent Poles...One Water Bucket...One Hatchet..."; Receipt of Sale to Col. J. E. Bryant from L. M. Cutcheon between the dates December 30, 1863, through January 26, 1864, for food goods; Receipt of Goods from Mr. E. H Burnside for "Five hundred and forty pounds of Fresh Beef on account of the United States government contract"; Quartermaster General's Office for Returns of Clothing and Camp and Garrison Equipage. Dated September 30, 1863, for "knives, spoons, plates, cups, coffee, pots..." pertaining to Company "E", 33rd Regiment of Illinois Volunteers; and a Personal Receipt belonging to Bryant for "soda...potatoes...onions."
