    Description

Fine Untouched H. Marshall, Atlanta, Ga. Confederate Wooden Scabbard Cavalry Saber. Exceptional, untouched H. Marshall, Atlanta, Ga. wooden scabbard cavalry saber with great history. Slightly curved blade now 34" long with about 3/4" broken from the tip. Wide shallow, rather crude, unstopped fuller terminating 1/2" from the hilt. Deep dark patina with some smooth very light old dry surface rust. Absolutely no pitting or nicks. Retains the original thin leather washer. Brass hilt with deep dark patina overall, with a 1/4" ferrule at the base of the grip. Leather wrapped grip with tight single strand on rather heavy gauge iron wire. Grip shows wear and use, along with some old chips but is 90% intact. Two piece wooden scabbard excellent / perfect, the wood with dark rich patina. No cracks or splits and very sound. Sheet iron mounts with brass ring mounts and iron rings The top ring is a period replacement, clearly and crudely hand forged. Brass drag and crude brass throat brazed in place. Scabbard has remains of two period ink script tags. Now badly faded with a number of chips and difficult to decipher.

This saber was picked up on the battlefield near the Fennell Plantation (located at the bend of the Tennessee River north of Guntersville, Ala.) after an engagement between the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry and Confederate Cavalry under the command of Gen. Hylan Lyons. The 15th Pa. defeated the Confederate and captured 100 prisoners. The Federal force burned Guntersville and several surrounding plantations but spared the Fennell Plantation for use as a hospital. The saber was picked up by Caius G. Fennell, the great-great-grandfather of the consigor, when he was 11 years old and passed down through the family to the consignor. The sword is accompanied by a letter from the consignor detailing it's history. Wonderful example of one of the most quintessentially 'Confederate' of all Confederate swords, in excellent untouched condition with superb history.
