    Description

Fine Quality and Condition Percussion Pennsylvania Swivel Breech Rifle, Circa 1850. Although unsigned, probably the work of the Harder family of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. 32" octagonal barrels, ¾" across the flats and decorated on the muzzles with engraved concentric rings. One barrel is deeply rifled .45 caliber, the other the same caliber smooth bore. German silver blade front sights and V-notch rear sights. Fine quality hand made back action lock, the barrels swivel/ lock by means of a lever that is mounted on a plate opposite the lock, showing exceptional workmanship. Both bolsters with clean out screws. All metal with smooth dark patina with just some medium pitting and a couple of vise marks at the breech, else really excellent. Brass ramrod pipes, trigger guard, butt plate, patchbox and elaborate 4½" toeplate. Oval German silver inlays on top and both sides of wrist, and forward of the toeplate. Really wonderful pierced German silver inlay of a spread wing eagle on the moulded cheekpiece. All furniture perfect with nice untouched patina. Walnut stock also about mint with original finish and just a few minor scratches. Fine bores, mechanically perfect, with single trigger. The ramrods appear to be correct, the one on the right missing the brass tip. A very nice rifle in a scarce form, with unembellished, but truly elegant and charming decoration.
