Fantastic Lot of G.A.R. Badges, Marksman's Badges, Shooting Awards, and Misc. Insignia associated with Two Generations of Indiana/ Ohio Fighting Men. This incredible group of medals, awards, badges and insignia is housed in a tatty folder marked with the insignia of the 137th Field Artillery of Indiana's 38th Division on the front. Laid-in to the folder are twenty-four 8½" x 11" sheets to which are mounted thirty individual pieces of insignia, badges, awards, etc. The preface, written by hand, reads: "The book is a collection of medals, badges and insignias of the army including some from the National Guard, World War and G.A.R. These medals are belongings of my father and great grandfather." Briefly, the collection consists of four marksmanship badges of various types, a WWI vintage multi-piece felt 38th division shoulder sleeve insignia, Mexican Border Service ribbon, Indiana National Guard Border Service medal, various officer's rank insignia, and various officer's collar insignia including three 137th Field Artillery examples. The men of the family were obviously keen marksmen as the collection has seven shooting match medals including a 1916 National Team Match Prize, a solid gold 1916 National Rifle Competition award named to Lt. F. W. Longfellow, and several other Indiana State Rifle Association awards. The Civil War is represented by a ladder badge with four "rungs" for Co. B of the 189 Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and three nice G.A.R. badges. An excellent named group spanning two generations and worthy of further research.
