Fall of Richmond Letter. 4-page letter written in pencil on bifolium stationery, Richmond, Virginia, April 5, 1865 from a brother to his sister. This was just two days after Confederate forces evacuated the city, leading to its capture by Union forces. The writer describes how his unit, along with the 5th Maryland, 12th New Hampshire and 9th Vermont, were ordered to form battalions with four days rations in their haversacks. "Then an orderly came back for us to take back the enemys guns they had abandoned - we started double quick and found that the Rebs had left all their guns on the outer breastworks. We worked like tigers all the forenoon getting them back when an order came for us to report at Richmond to Gen. Divens. We immediately started out and arrived in Richmond about three o'clock in the afternoon. The city was all a fire. It was a splendid sight to me. I could not help but shouting until I was hoarse... The arsenal in the city is full of cannon & arms of all kinds... I took a walk around the city yesterday. They walked me so much when I was a prisoner here that I was pretty well acquainted with the place... The first place I saw was Libby. It done me good to see 2000 Rebs shut up there in the place of Union soldiers. I wonder how they like the place... In the afternoon one of Porter's long boats came up with himself Pres. Lincoln & Gen. Grant. They went to the Capital and I suppose took a drink over their success." He envies the regiments who are out chasing the Southern Chivalry and tracking down Jeff Davis, but takes consolation in the fact that he was present at the fall of Richmond. Excellent.
