Extremely Rare, Type I, Hall/ North M1840 .52 Caliber, Smoothbore, Percussion Breech Loading Carbine. With only 508 of these carbines originally produced there is but a handful of known specimens extant. Overall in very nice condition with all metal smooth and dark, with the exception of some heavy pitting around the nipple, indicative of heavy use. Mechanism crisp and tight, sling ring on the lower portion of the trigger plate and very good markings. Wood exceptionally nice with smooth rich patina, inspector's mark "F. D."(?) and crisp one line marking behind the breech, clearly executed with a single die stamp, "W. Duncan", possibly the name of the owner. The gun exhibits a unique alteration to the breech opening mechanism, obviously to facilitate its use on horseback and very possibly Confederate. The front portion of the original elbow shaped breech operating mechanism was cut off flush with the mounting plate. The rear section of the breech operating mechanism was altered with the addition of a 2 1/2" hand forged iron loop with a 1" opening. Utilization of this alteration would allow the breech to be easily opened with a single step, the breech loaded with a combustible cartridge, and closed for firing, again with a single step, greatly facilitated by the large finger loop. A clever modification which allowed the carbine to be loaded and fired as simply as any of the Civil War period US issued single shot breech loading carbines. A most rare US issue carbine, with a fascinating period alteration very likely Confederate.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
