    Description

Exquisite Gold Badge and Pin of a Massachusetts Volunteer. Displaying the very finest of the jeweler's art are these two pieces owned by William H. Hawley, a private in Co. C, 44th Mass. Vol. Infantry. Most significant is Hawley's superbly executed 18th Corps badge consisting of a gold, engraved foliated cross into which is set a deep red enameled field. In each arm are embedded in gold block letters: "Co C./ MASS/ REGT/ VOLS" with a highly decorative "44" in relief gold numerals in the center. On the reverse, the arms are beautifully engraved "W.H. Hawley, Rawles Mills, Nov 2d,1862/ Whitehall, Dec 16th,1862/ Siege of, Washington N.C., March 30th to, April 17th, 1862/ Kingston, Dec 14th, 1862" and in the center "Goldsboro, Dec 17th, 1862." The cross measures 1.5" from point-to-point and is suspended from a delicate gold rectangular bar having its original t-bar pin fastener. Only a small inset appears to be missing from the bar but does not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. With it is Hawley's 2.5" long gold stick pin having a gold geometric plate descending from it that measures 1.25" x 0.75" at its widest point. On one side is beautifully engraved "44th Regt./ Wm. H Hawley./ Mass. Vols" with a large company letter "C" superimposed in the center. Engraved on the reverse is "Enlisted Sept. 12, 1862./ BOSTON/ Mustered out June 12, 1863." Hawley, an eighteen-year-old clerk from Boston, saw service with the 18th Corps in the Department of North Carolina for his unit's full nine-month term of service. An absolutely superlative pair of singular beauty.
