Exceptional Pennsylvania Rifleman's Hammer Poll Tomahawk C. 1820. The tomahawk was an important part of the Pennsylvania rifleman's equipage, for use both as a weapon and a utilitarian tool. These exquisite pieces, made by Pennsylvania gunsmiths are quite rare, with this being an exceptional example. Steel head 6" overall with nice sweeping curve to the base of the blade. Eight facets on the hammer poll. Head overall dark and smooth, totally untouched, as is the rest of the tomahawk, just some minor scattered salt and peppering and sharp as a razor. Curly maple haft 14½" long to the top of the head. There is decorative pewter inlay at the base of the head and the butt of the haft. The back side of the haft is decorated with file burn marks and twelve small bone beads, each applied with a small iron brad. The haft retains what appears to be all of the original crazed varnish, with dark rich patina, really exceptional. A truly exceptional example of one of the rarest products of Pennsylvania rifle maker's during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
