    Description

Exceptional James Purdey & Son Side-by-Side Shotgun and Fitted Case, Circa 1929 Manufacture. 12 gauge, 2¾" chambers. Serial number 23936. 30" blued Whitworth steel barrels with tapered slightly concave matte rib. Overall length of 47½", 14½" LOP over a rubber recoil pad, 1½" DAC, 2½" DAH. 7½ pounds overall weight. Double triggers. Highly figured checkered walnut stock with semi-pistol grip and matching fore end. Original owner's initials "ERP" on a 14 karat gold oval plate inlaid into the lower edge of the butt. Sidelock action, trigger guard and fore end trim ornately engraved in the well-known Purdey rose and scroll pattern with "Safe" highlighted in gold. Action case colored; trigger guard, fore end trim, and barrels blued. Bottom of action and barrels engraved "J. Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street, London England".

A beautiful and original pre-war side-by-side shotgun exemplifying the quality and attention to detail that has elevated Purdey & Sons guns to "finest in the world" status. This exquisite shotgun retains virtually all of the original case color on the action and about 95% of the blue finish. The barrels do have some uniform wear to the finish with some small light scratches on the underside. The bores are immaculate and bright. The wood has aged and emits a warm patina, highlighting the wonderful figuring in the walnut. The action remains tight and the double triggers have crisp pulls. The rubber recoil pad may be a later enhancement. The shotgun is complete with the original velvet lined fitted leather case with the Purdey's paper label in the lid. The case is worn at the corners and one side of top carrying strap has come unsewn. Otherwise the shotgun and case are in excellent condition.
