    Description

Enigmatic Fully Engraved Colt SAA .45 Caliber Revolver #353046, Mfg. 1929 The accompanying factory letter states the gun was shipped February 27, 1929 to the 101 Ranch, Ponca City, Ok. with 7 1/2" barrel, blue finish, caliber .45/c and hard rubber grips, as part of a total shipment of 15. The gun retains 99% of a period nickel finish on the barrel, ejector housing and frame. The cylinder and straps retain 99% of period silver plate. Mechanically perfect, perfect bore, crisp markings including Ponca City, Okla engraved in a panel on the left side of the barrel, and two line patent markings with rampant colt on the left side of the frame. The gun exhibits beautifully executed, full scroll and geometric engraved coverage in the 101 Ranch style. Rare Ivory grips with variegated color about perfect. An absolutely beautiful single action but with a noteworthy problem with respect to the 101 Ranch Association.
Research by the consignors father, who purchased the gun in 1982, revealed that another single action, with the identical serial number, was known to exist. This gun conforms precisely to the factory letter in every detail and has documented 101 Ranch association. The gun has been featured in at least one article and part of several displays of 101 Ranch firearms. This research led the owner to irately accept that his gun was apparently not correct, and he had the 101 Ranch logo, that was engraved on the backstrap, removed , and replaced with his own brand, back to back RB, and his own signature. In his mind guaranteeing that there would never again be any confusion between the two guns and generally accepting that his gun had, in fact been fraudulently altered to identify it as a 101 Ranch Colt. There are of course, many possible explanations for this anomaly, including, as we have seen in the past, duplicate Colt serial numbers on two different guns, however, the engraving on the gun has now been changed to reflect to owner's anger at feeling he had been duped. Fascinating story, and still a beautiful gun, with or without the 101 Ranch provenance..
