    Description

Personal Flag of General Lyman Lemnitzer

Early Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Flag. The Joint Chiefs of Staff was officially established under the National Security Act of 1948. The official flag was approved by the Secretary of Defense in 1949. The construction of this flag would almost certainly date it from the late 1940s or 1950s period. It measures 64" (fly) x 52" (hoist) with a 3" pole sleeve and 2" gold silk fringe border. The flag is double-sided and features a diagonally divided light blue and white field with a central eagle device borrowed from the flag of the Secretary of Defense. The flag is constructed using a silk field with stars and eagle device machine embroidered in silk thread. A Philadelphia Quartermasters tag is sewn in the pole sleeve of the flag but is undated. This version, with gold fringe is intended for parade or indoor use. The flag is in remarkable condition with only some trivial scattered staining. This is a rare opportunity to own a rare flag. Consignor indicates that this flag is from the estate of General Lyman Lemnitzer who was appointed Chairman by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and served from October 1, 1960 until September 30, 1962.
