An important and very early Continental pistol.

Early 18th Century Burl Wood Stocked French F/L Holster Pistol. 21" overall with cannon turned 14 1/8" smoothbore barrel. The barrel is decorated with raised decorative panels along the top and relief serpents on both sides of the breech. All iron furniture, the side plate in the form of an open mouthed serpent. Trigger guard with pierced fleur-de-lis finial with a serpent with forked tongue extending to the rear ramrod pipe. Ribbed iron ramrod pipes, the rear pipe with a small hole. Wrist escutcheon with a serpent finial and a pierced, open mouth, grotesque mask on the butt cap. The frizzen has been refaced with a serpent head finial where it rolls on the spring, mask chiseled on the face of the pan. Lock profusely engraved including P. David A Sanxany (Western France). The burl wood stock is extensively relief carved including serpents forward of the lock and side plate and a mask to the rear of the barrel tang. There is a minor hairline crack with no loss on the forestock at the rear ramrod pipe, else the stock is excellent with nice patina. All metal generally smooth and clean with just some minor pitting on the butt cap. Original ebony ramrod with the ivory tip chipped.
