    Description

    E. Leon Durand, "The Commission", oil on canvas, 24" x 29", framed to an overall size of 27" x 33", signed lower left "E. L. Durand 1879". This extremely evocative painting shows a pensive soldier in the famed 7th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment sitting beside a dying campfire at dusk, holding a document in his hand. The soldier's uniform identifies his regiment as the 7th New York with the gray of the uniform, the black stripe down the leg of the trouser, and the black band on the kepi. He also has the distinctive white leather waist and cross belts worn by the regiment. The cross belt plate has the numeral "7" in the center. The 7th New York Regiment dispensed with their pre-war issue gray uniforms late in early 1862, so this painting depicts a soldier in 1861. When the regiment answered President Lincoln's call to arms in April 1861, it was posted to Washington, D.C. to defend the capitol. In the background, the dome of the capitol building is clearly visible. He holds in his hand a commission, bearing an embossed red seal, raising him from an enlisted man on picket duty to the an officer's rank. The enormity of the change is reflected in his young face. The painting is in excellent condition.
