An exceptional example of a very rare U.S. martial carbine with possible 7th Cavalry use

Custer Serial Range, Fine Condition, US M1873 .45-70 Carbine, #36406. Doubtless the finest condition Custer range gun we've ever catalogued. #36419 is identified as a 7th Cav. issued gun and was turned in damaged, while #46442 was recaptured from the Indians after the Custer fight. The gun is an unaltered first model and retains 25% of the original blue mixing with pleasing smooth even gray patina. Crisp markings including 1873 date on lock and eaglehead with crossed arrows / US and Model 1873 on the high arch breech door. Mechanically perfect, excellent bore with short comb stock, without cleaning rod compartment. Stacking swivel on band. Wood really excellent with crisp script P behind trigger guard and excellent ESA cartouche opposite lock. There are signs of a slight hairline with possibly an old, and extremely well done repair at the wrist, but looks fine and detracts little.
