Confederate Civil War 1st National Pattern Line Marker with Fonda Thomsen Analysis Report. 11 1/2" on the hoist and 16 1/2" on the fly. The flag is constructed on one layer of cotton fabric, with seven white stars attached to each side of the canton. The stars being, on average, 1 3/8" point to point. The flag is hand sewn throughout, with an average of 6 running stitches per inch. There is no obvious means of attachment, but close inspection reveals tack holes visible at the top, middle and bottom of the leading edge. The flag has a large vertical crease down the center and a lesser crease across the center, obviously the result of it being folded over a long period of time. The flag is intact, with no alterations or additions, but does exhibit some soiling, which apparently occurred while the flag was folded, else excellent, untouched, sound condition.

At the beginning of the Civil War, there were lance flags, of a similar size, but with a swallowtail fly and four pointed stars being made in Richmond for use by cavalry, with contracts being given to local ladies for their manufacture. However, similar smaller flags exist, that were used either for domestic purposes or as flank markers. While there is little question the flag was produced domestically, rather than under military auspices, the slight distortion of the fabrics would indicate the flag was hanging on a staff, albeit for an apparently short period time, pointing to its use as a line marker. The flag is unquestionably, with respect to construction and use, of the period of the American Civil War. A scarce Confederate flag in fine untouched condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
