Colt SAA Revolver Cal. .44-40 #57129 Mfg. 1880 with a Fascinating History. The gun is accompanied by a factory letter which shows it was shipped to Simmons Hardware Co., July 16, 1880, in nickel, and was one of a shipment of 25 guns. 7" barrel, the gun retains 30% of the original nickel, the balance smooth and brown. Fine markings, mechanically perfect and very good bore. Marked .44 C. F. on the trigger guard. Initials "HB" carved on the left grip, initials "J. H. S." carved on the underside of the left grip and "Cole Younger" carved on the right grip. All carvings show considerable wear and use and certainly appear to be period. The gun is accompanied by not only the factory letter but a notarized letter from the previous owner, dated 1999, stating the gun was given to him by his father, who had acquired it from the family of the judge who had presided over the trial of the Youngers, who were sentenced to life imprisonment for their part in the Northfield, Minnesota raid in 1876. While the serial number of the gun places its date of manufacture during the period Cole Younger was in prison, it is believed to have been one of a number of guns sent out by Younger as presents to people who had been influential in his capture, sentencing, and eventual parole in 1901. A wonderful early single action loaded with character, and accompanied by a fascinating aura of history.
