Colt M1860 .44 Cal. Percussion Fluted Cylinder Army Revolver #3842 with a Fascinating History. All metal generally smooth and brown with traces of case colors on frame. Also about 20% silver on the trigger guard. Very good markings, fine bore and mechanically perfect. The barrel is now 7½", the loading lever catch, wedge and front trigger guard screw are incorrect period replacements. One of the cylinder locking notches is ground slightly oversize, reason unknown. The cylinder clearly shows the patent information but there is no number. Grips really excellent with three neatly cut notches on the left side. The gun is accompanied by a notarized letter dated 1999 in which the current owner relates that he acquired the gun from the widow of a collector in Ardmore, Oklahoma, in 1939 at which time she informed him that the gun had belonged to "an outlaw Sheriff in Montana." Subsequent research on the part of the owner identified the "outlaw Sheriff" as Henry Plummer. Plummer who had a notorious outlaw history but, remarkably, on May 23, 1863, he was elected Sheriff of Bannack, Montana. In late 1863, Plummer was implicated as the leader of a band of outlaws involved in robbing several stage coaches and, on January 10, 1864, was hanged by a group of vigilantes. Interestingly the writer of the letter has specifically identified the kills represented by each of the three notches on the left grip. A truly fascinating story. A most interesting example of this scarce Colt.
