Colorful "Zouave" Style Chasseurs Cap. This dazzling scarlet wool chasseur cap recalls the look of the quintessential zouave officer. The kepi features four bands of narrow gold braid that surround the cap's dark blue wool band and proceed up the front, back, and sides. The crown is bordered by one band of the same braid and four more bands that loop into a substantial quatrefoil in the center. A narrow braided gold cord chinstrap is attached by two staff officer side buttons and the cap is complete with a thick glazed visor. The body rises from 2" in the front to 4" in the rear. Sewn on the front is an arched patch of blue wool with the embroidered block letters "BZ." The interior retains its full thin leather sweatband and a dark brown "bag" lining decorated with a chocolate brown leaf motif. In the top is an embossed oval with the maker's name "Baker & McKenney,/ Military Goods,/ 141/Grand St./ New-York." Records show that the firm operated at that address from 1864 until it became James H. Ridabock & Co. in 1883. A very attractive uniform item.
