COLONEL GEORGE H. CHAPMAN 3RD INDIANA CAVALRY AND STAFF MARKED BRADY. Almost as interesting as the photo are the inscriptions written in the margin of the mat. This outdoor scene pictures Colonel Chapman and I believe his staff in front of the tent. In the background you can see the horses tethered to the trees. The person noting the identity of these individuals seems to be doing so from recollection He names the second man from the left as Lieut. Farr, the man seated in the center as Col. Chapman, the bearded man as Sergeant Beck, and the man on the end Major Patton. A hand written note reads " Lieut.Gilchrist holds the pole", and yet another on the opposite end reads "other man I forget." These images are exceptional and very clear. The faint notation dots from the identifier’s pen melt into the picture and are hardly noticed. The interesting handwritten identifications just add to the interest of this piece. The photo itself is 4 inches by 2 ¾ inches. Verso has 3 cent Washington green tax stamp. What a wonderful piece of Civil War history.
