Wonderful, Untouched, High Grade, Silver Grip Civil War Presentation by Miller & Co., New York Beautifully inscribed on the German silver scabbard between the upper and middle mounts, "Presented to / Capt. Henry Page A. Q. M. / By The / Employees of the Quartermaster Dept at / Yuba Dam, Virginia / 1863". Page enlisted as a QM Sgt. in the 11th Mass, Inf. on 6/13/61 and was promoted to 1st Lt. on 8/10/61 and Capt. 11/26/62. He was subsequently commissioned into the U. S. Quartermaster Dept as Asst. QM on 2/15/63 and promoted to Lt. Col. on 7/11/64. Page remained with the Department until muster out on 7/17/67.

The sword is completely untouched. The 31" blade is etched for 2/3 its length with an unusual pattern doubtless unique to Miller & Co. Obverse with floral/scroll work with a central theme of an arms/flag panoply with riband containing the motto "Stand By The Union". The reverse with additional floral and scroll work with central theme of an American eagle clutching arrows with riband, hand engraved with motto. The eagle is surmounted by a large intertwined US. Etched above the ricasso "Miller / & Co. / New York" and marked on the ricasso Collins & Co. / Hartford / Conn. / 1862. The blade with a couple of minor scattered stains else about mint with 95% brilliant luster gilt brass guard pierced with three dimensional, finely detailed, acorns and oak leaves. The outward branch is decorated with line engraving and inboard with relief scroll work. Heavy scroll quillon that is slightly bent. Scroll work also on the knucklebow and where it joins the pommel. The ribbed grip is decorated with tiny lines and appears to be solid silver. The backstrap exhibits deep relief leaves and berries and the faces of the pommel are pebbled and decorated with tiny stars. A solder spot on the top of the pommel clearly indicates it once mounted a figure, most likely an eagle, which is now missing. Hilt retains 60% of the original gilt. German silver scabbard completely untouched uncleaned and excellent with just a few minor shallow dents midway between the middle and lower mount. Mounts are exceptional. Ring mounts with very deep relief leaves and berries and brass rings. The upper mount bordered with relief scroll work and at the top an arms panoply with unique decoration below of a skull and cross bones flanked by American flags. Middle mount with arms panoply incorporating American flag and shield at top and arms panoply with chapeau, knapsack etc. below. The lower mount is spectacular with engraved and cast scroll decoration and, in deep relief, a 3" high Zouave, with US on his knapsack, standing above an American eagle. The reverse of all mounts completely covered with magnificent scroll and floral engraving. All mounts perfect and retaining traces of the original gilt. An exceptionally nice Civil War presentation for quality, condition and history.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
