Very Scarce U.S. M1851 .54 Caliber Percussion Cadet Musket, Springfield / 1852. A most unusual example of this rare U.S. military longarm, that doubtless bears an interesting history, now apparently lost. Some light pitting near the muzzle and at the breech, with some heavy pitting on the hammer clearly indicating heavy use, the balance of the metal smooth with nice brown/ gray patina. The hammer screw is a correct replacement, else complete and original in every respect. Lock markings crisp, correct proofs at breech. Hammer a bit loose on the tumbler post, and the gun does not stay at full cock, easily repaired. The stock is excellent with visible inspector's cartouche, and exhibits a smooth dark patina while showing evidence, on the right side, of an oval plaque having been mounted on the gun. The screw holes now filled, but showing the clear outline of the plaque. The cheek side of the gun shows the results of the gun having been struck by a shotgun blast, with eleven pellet holes, seven of them still retaining the oxidized and obviously very old, lead pellets, doubtless reflecting the story that was once told on the plaque. The 1851 Cadet is, of course, well known as the weapon carried by VMI cadets at the Battle of New Market, although those guns are generally accepted as being dated 1851. A fascinating gun with a remarkable, yet to be told, story.
