    Description

Very Nice Regulation Civil War Infantry Overcoat. For a garment with honest wartime use, this classic infantryman's overcoat is in exceptional condition and has wonderful character. Constructed of sky blue kersey, the coat retains all five original large general service "eagle" buttons on the front and six smaller ones on the cape. The unlined cape is firmly attached and extends "down to the elbows when the arm is extended" as called for in regulations. The 6" deep cuffs are also in place as is the belted back fastened by a single button. The entire coat is very sound with an insignificant scattering of mostly minor moth holes and a more significant patch at the base and on the reverse of one skirt. The condition of the coarse brown lining is near perfect. Each sleeve bears four "size dots." One has the stenciled number "42" along with the original owner's inked initials "WHS." The other sleeve is inspector-marked "22" and "4/SA" indicating it was contracted by the Schuylkill Arsenal, a major clothing depot in Philadelphia. An excellent example of an essential uniform item that saw service.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
