    Description

Very Likely the Most Important Civil War Marine Corps Photograph Extant. With only a total of 3167 Marines authorized by Congress in 1861, photographs of Civil War Marines, either as individual portraits or groups, are extremely rare. This is certainly the largest contingent of US Marines to have been photographed during the war, and provides remarkable detail of uniforms, equipment and weapons for this contingent of 32 enlisted Marines, plus eight officers and NCOs, and a drummer. Identified as "The Marine Command/ Under Capt. Geo. Butler/ Navy Yard Charlestown, Mass." and executed by Boston's most illustrious photographer J. W. Black, listing his 163 & 173 Washington St. address. The albumen image size is 11.25" x 16" with the mount 16" x 20". Image bright and crisp with superb detail Some water staining on the mount, and acid bleedthrough from the frame backing (image is accompanied by the original frame), all of which can be readily removed by a competent restorer. A great Civil War photographic rarity of considerable historic import.
