Variant "Great Star" 34 Star Civil War Flag. 56" on the hoist and 87" on the fly, double sided, constructed entirely of cotton. The stripes average 4 1/4" in width. There are nine large stars that average 4 1/2" point to point, and 25 small stars that average 2 1/2"' The flag retains one cotton tie, with points where there were apparently at least two more attached, on the 1 1/2" cotton hoist. The name "A. P. Chalker / 1861" is written in ink script on the hoist, with our research not yielding any information on the name. The flag is entirely hand stitched and is bound along every edge, with the exception of the top of the canton, with a 1/4" cotton edging. There is some damage with apparently some old restoration to a few of the tears on the top stripe, along with one tear on the third stripe, else in excellent sound condition. The flag has been archivally mounted and framed. The consignor states the flag was purchase at public auction where a number of items from the estate of Gen. John A. Logan were being offered, although we have no firm established link to the general. A very desirable form, early Civil War, American flag.
