U.S.S. Monitor: Finely Detailed Bronze Model.
Bronze model of the Ironclad warship, U.S.S. Monitor numbered 1/10 (first of only ten made), by William McGrath. 28" x 5.5" high, in original plexi, oak and marble case/stand. The Monitor was ordered in October 1861 to combat a new Ironclad, the "Virginia" which was being built by the Confederates. Completed in just 101 days in late 1861 she launched January, 30th 1862. The Monitor was thrown into battle at Hampton Roads on March 9th 1862. She would do battle for 4 hours with the Confederate Ironclad, neither being able to do very much damage to each other. The battle was considered a Union victory which stopped the Confederates from smashing their way through the Union blockade. The model has great detail down to the number of guns aboard. The piece is an excellent example of what the Monitor would have looked like in her prime.

N.B.: The plexi cover has a 1" chip on one corner.
