US M1861 .58 Cal. Percussion Rifled Musket, U. S. Philadelphia, 1862. The gun is overall about mint unfired. All metal smooth and clean with just some minor scattered staining. Crisp markings, mechanically perfect, mint bore. The barrel bears standard proofs at the breech as well as N. J. surcharge on the left side. The breech date is 1864. Wood also about mint with just a few very minor dents and one small chip at the forward lockbolt washer. Stock completely devoid of inspectors' marks but bearing very small N. J. surcharge opposite the lock. Stock also marked with 55 forward of the buttplate tang, and B behind the barrel tang. B is also stamped on the barrel tang. The lack of inspectors' marks makes it impossible to verify that this is, in fact, a totally correct U. S Philadelphia contract, however, the noteworthy discrepancy between the lock and breech date would seem to call into questions the integrity of the gun. Nevertheless and absolutely gorgeous M1861 rifled musket, few finer.
