US M1842 .69 Caliber Smoothbore Percussion Musket, Springfield 1854. Fitted with long range rear sight but remaining in smoothbore configuration (one of the more curious enigmas in US arms production). All metal generally smooth and clean with excellent markings including 1845 tang date and the number 16 on a number of parts, including barrel bands, breech tang and butt plate, possibly a regimental designation. Metal with absolutely no rust or pitting and really very nice. Wood very good with dark patina. No visible inspector's cartouche and there is a filled area on the left side of the butt stock. Obviously very well done long ago but readily detectable upon close inspection. Also there is a 1/16" filled cut, 4" behind the rear band, where someone apparently began to cutoff the forestock but stopped short of completion. Wood otherwise with just a few scattered nicks/dents. Despite the repairs still a very attractive musket and possibly worthy of a replaced stock.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
