Untouched Confederate Cedar Wood Canteen with Great Capture History from the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky. Classic form with iron staves, three tin sling loops, slightly convex face, 7.125" diameter, made without a spout. The canteen completely untouched, uncleaned, with dark patina. Initials "J. W. W." carved on one face, doubtless the original owner. The reverse face completely covered, in carefully executed pin prick design with the following history, "Confederate Canteen Taken at Battle of Perryville, Ky. Oct 8th 1862 By C. M. Alderman Co. K 105th O. V.", and along the bottom edge, "Was 19 Yrs old / Feb. 11th 1906 / C. M. Alderman". Cassius M. Alderman enlisted in the 105th Ohio August 12, 1862, and served with the unit until he was mustered out June 3, 1865. The Battle of Perryville was the 105th's first action, after which they were constantly engaged through Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina, including the surrender of Johnston's Army, losing 107 men killed and mortally wounded. Great canteen with a superb history.
