United States Colored Troops: Stenciled "I", "15 USCT" Canteen.
This rare example, complete with leather strap and attributed to Co. I, 15th United States Colored Troops. The 15th USCT Regiment was organized at Chattanooga, TN in January 1864. They were later reassigned to duty in Nashville,TN (April 1864) and Murfreesboro, TN (August 1864), with the unit being mustered out in August 1865. Colored Troops were often given "used" equipment and this appears, from the leather strap to be an earlier war canteen and probably recovered with part of a recycled blanket. Anything from the Civil War that was used by black soldiers is quite rare and quite desirable.
