    Description

Unique Civil War US Navy ID Tag Carved From a 'Sea Heart'. The sea heart is the fruit of the entada gigas vine and is commonly encountered in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which is commensurate with the ship on which the sailor was stationed. Approx. 1 1/2" diameter and carved on the face and highlighted in white, "James / Galloway" with fouled anchor. Carved on the reverse, also highlighted with white, "U. S. S. Clyde F. J. T. C. (G.) M. / 1863". The U. S. S. Clyde was a 294 ton side wheel steam gunboat, built in 1861 in Scotland. In the Spring of 1863 , under the name Neptune, she was employed as a blockade runner, making one successful voyage in and out of Mobile. On 14 June 1863, while attempting another trip to Mobile, she was captured by the U. S. S. Lackawana. Purchased by the U. S. Navy, she was renamed Clyde in Sept. 1863 and sent to the Gulf of Mexico where she spent the remainder of the war on station off the Florida coast. She subsequently captured an additional blockade runner, and participated in Florida River expeditions, finally being decommissioned in August 1865. Unique ID tag associated with a most interesting ship.
