Union Captain's Archive With Edwin Stanton DS. Approximately fifty official documents, mostly manuscript, pertaining to Captain Charles A. Woodworth of "Ellsworth's Avengers"-- the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry. Colonel Elmer Ellsworth of the New York Fire Zouaves became one of the Civil War's first "big name" casualties when he was killed in Alexandria, Virginia on May 21, 1861. His death was especially mourned in New York and the state raised the 44th Volunteer Regiment in Ellsworth's honor. The archive offered here was compiled by Charles Woodworth, a captain in this elite regiment. Woodworth, meeting the rigorous criteria for enlisting in the 44th, did so on August 8, 1861 and served until disabled by wounds received at Malvern Hill on July 1,1862. Thereafter Woodworth secured a First Lieutenant's commission in the Veteran Volunteer Corp. The archive offered here is quite comprehensive and includes returns, appointments, General Orders and the like. The two highlights of this collection are as follows: Manuscript Document, "Muster Roll of Capt. Wm. N. Danks Company H 44th Regiment New York Vol. Infantry", 4 pages, 4vo, September 1861. A very early company listing for this extremely important regiment. Splits on folds, else fine condition; Partially printed Document Signed, "Edwin M Stanton", one page, 8vo, Washington, D.C., February 4, 1864. A War Department form letter appointing Woodworth a 1st Lieutenant in the Invalid Corps. A large, bold Stanton signature above an imprinted "Secretary of War". Attractive and in very fine condition.Auction Info
