Ulysses S. Grant: Autograph and More. 1) Autograph of "U. S. Grant" written in purple ink on a 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" card. 2) 3-page manuscript testimonial to Grant, written on three sheets of 7 3/4" x 10" stationery (some tape repairs and hinging), as part of the presentation of a sword by citizens of Jo Davis County, Illinois (Grant's home county which includes Galena). Undated, but no doubt of Civil War vintage. "We not only bear to you this sword in the name of the people of our county, but we bear to you the most ardent wish of every loyal and patriotic citizen thereof for your continued success in the noble work in which you are engaged." 3) 4-page letter on bifolium writing paper, Washington, D.C., January 25, 1867, from Maria Hall to Alfred Mills of Morristown. The letter discusses in great detail various visits to social events. These include meeting General & Mrs. Grant, a visit with President Johnson at the White House, a dance and meeting with Speaker Colfax where she also saw Senator Charles Sumner and his wife. "Last week we attended a ball at the White House - very much against my grain I went & very much against my will I found Andy shaking hands with me - I got out of his presence as soon as possible and tried to think he was not standing in the place where I had such a cordial handshake from our blessed Lincoln. What a bitter contrast it is!"
