Two Civil War Period Telescopes With Inscriptions Although we believe both of these pieces to be of the Civil War period, we also feel that the inscriptions have been added post period.
Four section 17" long when opened brass telescope, and leather covering on the brass barrel. Overall about perfect condition, just some minor shrinkage of the leather covering on the barrel. Perfect optics. Inscribed on the top section "Capt. S. B. Spooner / 46th Ms. Inf. / 1862. Spooner enlisted as a Captain in the 46th Mass. on 9/25/62, was promoted to Maj. on 2/5/63 and mustered out 7/29/63.
There other telescope is also of brass with four sections and 29" when opened. In addition there is a 4" sliding sunshade. Inscribed in block letters on the top ring of the barrel "Lt. J. O'Kane U. S. N." and on the lower barrel ring "U. S. S. Paul Jones / 1863". Overall about perfect condition, with perfect optics although missing the barrel cover, probably originally leather. James O'Kane graduated from the Naval Academy in 1860 and served throughout the Civil War and retired in 1889. He served as executive officer aboard the Gunboat Paul Jones in 1863.
Again although we believe the telescopes to be period we are of the opinion the inscriptions are post period.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
