The Great Seal of the Confederate States of America. This copper electrotype copy of the Seal of the Confederacy has a uniformed and mounted George Washington in the center with laurel wreath surround and border inscription "The Confederate States of America: February 1862/ Deo Vindice". The 3.5" diameter medallion is in its original velvet lined, red leather fitted box, 5" square. The medallion is mounted under glass and surrounded by a metal bezel. The exterior of the case is worn and the leather chipped. The medallion is in very fine condition.

The Great Seal of the Confederate States of America was engraved in 1864, by Joseph S. Wyon, of London, England, engraver of many British campaign medals and coins in the 19th century. The original seal was of silver. During the evacuation of Richmond, it was overlooked by the Confederate authorities, and subsequently fell into the possession of Colonel John T. Pickett, of Washington, D.C., who had a number of electrotype copies made in copper, silver and gold.

Eventually, on December 27th, 1888, the seal was formally presented it to the State of South Carolina. This piece may be one of Colonel Pickett's copies.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
