    Description

    Sword, Officers' Sash, Epaulet and Shoulder Straps Attributed to Lt. Edward T. Durant, Co. B, 33rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
    Edward Durant was a resident of Lisle, Illinois who enlisted as a private on August 20, 1861. He mustered into Co. B of the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry where he was promoted to 2nd Lt. on January 23, 1863 and to 1st Lt. on September 23, 1863. He mustered out on November 24, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. In the years after the war Durand sought a pension for health problems he felt he acquired during the war. A large archive of photocopied records related to his service and post-war applications for a disability pension are included with the group. The lot comprises: 1.) German import U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officers' sword made by Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. The sword has a 30 ¾-inch slightly curved blade etched with an eagle, "US" and foliate scroll. The reverse ricasso has a Schuyler, Hartley & Graham retailer's mark. The brass hilt is loose on the blade but the fish skin wrap and wire remain intact on the grip. The leather scabbard has a brass throat, mounts and tip and two mounting rings. 2.) Officer's red silk sash measuring approximately 7 feet in length and 4-inches wide. 3.) 2nd Lieutenants' epaulet with a rifleman button. 4.) 1st Lieutenants' shoulder straps framed with a reprinted photograph of Lt. Durant. 5.) 38 8.5 x 14.5-inch photocopies of the original muster rolls, pension applications, affidavits, etc. related to Durant.

    Condition: 1.) Good. The blade exhibits an overall smooth, dark patina; as mentioned the hilt is loose on the blade; the scabbard is dry with surface cracks, splits at the seams and is starting to crack and separate just above the brass tip. 2.) Good. The sash has numerous small holes and a few short tears. 3.) Good. 4.) Good. The straps show definite signs of having been worn and display honest wear. 5.) Excellent.
